“While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.” -2 Peter 2
Many young women have been lured away from their families and churches by the promise of freedom. The promise of wealth and fame. The promise of a forbidden love. The promises of success, popularity or beauty. Slowly, we become enticed and lulled into a sense of false comfort and liberty. Until one day, something happens to make you realize that what you built your whole world around was just shifting sand – here today, gone tomorrow.
That’s why I’m calling on you today to see through the false teaching and lies. That makeup tutorial promising you a flawless face won’t make him love you. Leaving the church or your parent’s house/rules/curfew won’t make your life easier or better. Snagging the perfect guy won’t make your life a fairy tale. But all those things can hold you bondage until you have a bathroom overflowing with beauty products, a broken relationship with your parents or church, and a guy who has a possessive streak and a mean temper behind closed doors.
Now, these may seem like cliche examples, but many girls have fallen for these false promises of freedom. And there are dozens more of similar stories. You may have even lived one out or are currently in a situation which you thought would bring you freedom, but instead leaves you enslaved to its demands. These are the wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
Know that true freedom can only be found in Christ. Anything else that promises you freedom is merely a passing whimsy and a demanding mistress. Build your security on an eternal foundation. Know what the Truth and who God is though daily Bible study so that you’re not swept away by pretty words and empty promises. Because if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.
