Day 283: Fullness (Isaiah 43-44; Colossians 2)

What are you filled with? What is your mind filled with? What are your days filled with? These are not easy questions to answer. In fact, you may read these words and move on with your day without ever taking stock of what you are filled with. Please don’t do that though. Stop for a minute and evaluate what you’re filling your mind, soul and life with.

Usually we fill up with the things we think will bring us acceptance, success, love, or happiness. We eat vegetables because we know they’re good for us and as a result we’ll have a healthier body. We turn to entertainment in all different forms when we’re bored or “need an escape” from the real world. We fill ourselves with anger when someone hurts us. We absorb what is in our textbooks in hopes of having a successful career after graduation. We fill up on the voices in our heads that tell us that we’re not pretty/skinny/smart/popular enough. We take in the love of our loved ones.

All of that and more fills us up. Some of it is good. Some of it is not so good. But all of it makes us who we are.

But none of those things – not even in the greatest quantities – will complete you. A boy won’t do that – even if he’s quite perfect. The perfect body, a tribe, a 4.0 GPA, a seven figure net worth, or more sleep won’t do it for you either.

Because from the beginning we’ve been rigged to crave our Creator more than anyone and anything else. All of creation was made to seek the Lord and to glorify His name. Everything else is a poor substitute. So, fill yourself up with Christ and His Word. Before you start to put anything else on your schedule or inside your heart and mind, go to your Creator. Because when you put the good quality stuff into your tank, your life will run so much smoother. Don’t go for the cheap and fast substitutes. Choose the real thing. Choose Jesus. Nothing else on this earth compares to the fullness of Christ.
