Earlier this year I received the news that I would be losing my job. I instantly took on a new task of submitting my resume everywhere (talk about exhausting). I experienced the highs and lows of being called for interviews and still not being chosen. Then, I read 1 Kings 18, and I decided to replace my growing doubt and struggling faith with the model used by Elijah!
Then he said to his servant, “Go and look out toward the sea.” The servant went and looked, then returned to Elijah and said,” I didn’t see anything.” Seven times Elijah told him to go and look. Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.” -1 Kings 18:43-44
The servant that Elijah sent to check if the rain was coming brought the bad news six times: no rain. Each time, Elijah showed his faith in God by praying continuously, intentionally believing that God was creative and all-powerful. It seems that each time the answer was “no,” Elijah gained more strength to worship and continue praying! Finally on that seventh trip, the servant comes running with the good news that the rain was coming!
Elijah brings new hope and faith, that if we continue to model him through worship, consistently praying and our growing faith, then we may also one day come running with the good news that we have received what we’ve prayed for so long!
